Inclinometer tubes are usually installed in vertical boreholes passing through the unstable soil layer to the lower stable stratum. The deformation of the inclinometer is observed by using digital vertical movable inclinometer probe, control cable, pulley device and reading instrument. The first observation can establish the initial section of the inclinometer. Subsequent observations will show the change of section displacement when the ground moves. During the observation, the probe moves from the bottom of the inclinometer tube to the top, pauses at the half meter distance and carries out the measurement tilt work.

The tilt of the probe is measured by two servo accelerometers with balanced force. An accelerometer measures the longitudinal position of the inclinometer tube groove, that is, the inclination of the plane where the measuring wheel is located on the inclinometer probe. The other accelerometer measures the inclination perpendicular to the plane of the measuring wheel. The inclination can be converted into lateral displacement. Comparing the current and initial observation data, the variation of lateral migration can be determined, and the movement displacement of stratum can be shown. A high resolution displacement profile can be obtained by drawing the variation of the offset. This section is helpful to determine the magnitude, depth, direction and rate of ground motion displacement.
