Principle
When the pile head is excited by vibration equipment such as hammer or force rod, the generated stress wave will propagate down the pile body. During the propagation process, if it encounters the wave impedance interface, the reflection and transmission of the sound wave will occur. The magnitude of the reflected and transmitted energy of the stress wave depends on the magnitude of the wave impedance of the two media. According to the wave theory, when the stress wave encounters fracture, segregation, necking and bottom expansion, the reflected wave is in phase with the initial motion phase of the incident wave because the wave impedance becomes smaller; when the stress wave encounters neck expansion and bottom expansion, the wave the impedance becomes larger, and the reflected wave is out of phase with the initial motion of the incident wave. Combined with the amplitude, wave velocity, and arrival time of reflected waves, a comprehensive judgment can be made on the integrity, degree of defect, and location of the pile.
